Marisa and Joe,
I felt compelled to let you both know the feelings the stories evoked in me. The further I read, the more teary eyed I became. These were not tears of sadness, but of pride and happiness when I know that our youth are succeeding in spite of what can sometimes be very challenging life events. I know a few of the students and their backgrounds which, carry much bigger stories than an article can reveal. I also know there are just as many youth out there who want more for themselves but have no idea how to begin to find it. I was one of them. Joining the military during the height of the Vietnam conflict helped me find my way, but how much easier it would have been if I had the opportunities that programs such as these offer, along with people in the education and professional fields that not only have the foresight to see what can be helpful to kids, but the willingness to try and find ways to provide it. As a Native elder, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother, my heart soars with the joy of knowing others are out there fighting for our youth and their futures – in ways that truly make a difference. Thank you so much for all your hard work, and more importantly, for your commitment to young people. Programs like this are great for all youth but are especially important and needed for our youth of color.
